Zeus Inc The Alex Grosjean Adventures Robin Burks 9781517556488 Books Reviews

Although it was a bit of a slow start, I found that I very rapidly dove into the story and characters. A little reminiscent of Gaiman's American Gods, it was a fun read and I'm definitely looking forward to the next volume.
Robin creates a very believable future setting, not going overboard with technology. The intrigue of the plot captures the readers attention, and the added fantasy twist rounds out the story. Her main character, Alex Grosjean, is very well developed, and I felt a connection with her. Some of the other characters could have been 'fleshed out' a little more, but it didn't negatively effect the book at all...possibly a plot device to add a little more intrigue.

I loved the storyline. It had really good flow. You don't feel rushed through the book, and it doesn't drag either. I certainly look forward to reading more Alex Grosjean adventures. I actually give a 4.5 star rating. Great job Robin!!!
A very ambitious debut novel from Robin Burks, with all of the makings of a fun series. The tone shifts about halfway through so I almost find it easier to review as two separate books

The second half of this debut novel is a glorious romp through Greek mythology with all of the action and humor of Douglas Adams' "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul", and deserves five stars. A good working knowledge of Greek mythology is recommended to enjoy all of the references and jokes.

The first half of the novel is more of a neo-noir slightly cyberpunk mystery which has some great moments, but isn't quite as effective as the second half. I'd give that section three stars.

Overall, a four star book and a promising start to a fun, action packed sci-fi series. I look forward to the second one.
Great book by a great author! The story was easy to follow and even easier to relate to the characters, making it very hard to put down. Part mystery, part intrigue, part fantasy with a dash of futuristic foresight. I can't wait to see what is coming up next for this awesome author!
It may be the first - it certainly will not be the last - love the characters and the plot. This is a great read, looking forward to the next one!
Strong female protagonists in science fiction have become a good genre trope, probably thanks primarily to franchises like Alien. It seems that far too often however that these characters are generic archetypes that are pretty poorly handled and generally lacking in depth. This is not the case with Alex Grosjean, the protagonist and narrator of Robin Burks` debut novel, Zeus, Inc. The most important part of the believability and overall likability of Alex is that she is flawed; she is not a perfect hero, and the depth of character lends itself to realism despite a fantastic setting.

Zeus, Inc starts off sort of like a Chandler-esque detective story, with the obvious difference that Alex Grosjean couldn't really be accurately portrayed by Humphrey Bogart. She mostly deals with small time private detective work, but finds herself investigating a missing persons incident because of a close connection she has to the aforementioned missing person. It was definitely enjoyable just as a slightly-futuristic detective story, before the twist that takes it into a new direction and makes it into something even more interesting. Think a more grown up Percy Jackson & the Olympians crossed with The Big Sleep.

Although the prose is a bit stiff early on, and Burks does a bit too much of info dumping in the first few chapters, the novel really finds its feet less than a quarter of the way in, and becomes a really engaging novel. The story line's hard turn and the strength of Alex Grosjean as a character really make Zeus, Inc stand out. The dialogue is almost always great, and the prose overall gets better as the novel goes on. Robin Burks is an accomplished writer who does a lot of good work for places like Rant Gaming, and her own immensely enjoyable website Fan Girl Confessions. The strength of this novel is a testament to her versatility. There will apparently be future installments of the series, and it is definitely a series worth following.

Simply put, Zeus Inc was a great read. It was actually recommended in a posting on Google+! I wanted to try something new and try a novel writer. After a quick 1-click purchase, I found myself fighting to put it down to get to work and live life in the real world! Having the version available was a definite bonus allowing me to get in a few minutes here and there to satisfy my need to read more.

I could not say it any better than what the reviewers before me have stated. It is a nice blend of "old themes" set in a modern world. Looking back there could have been more character development for the secondary characters in the story but I think this would have detracted from bonding with the heroine. It was that bond along with the fascinating plot that kept me glued to my various devices at all the odd hours. I hope to read more from this author and look forward to watching the character of Alex Grasjean mature.
