Review

‘The fast-paced style blends the spiritual and the practical, drama and reflection, humour and pain. Prepare to laugh and cry and to learn something about yourself.’ -Jill Treseder

‘This is not just a book for Doulas, it is a book for women.’ -Claire Arnold

‘Hazel Tree writes with conviction and gives the reader a glimpse into the life of a doula. As the Director of Birth Arts International I personally think all students should read this book and learn from it and know they are not alone in their working experiences.’ -Demetria Clark,

Book Description

‘I caught my breath. She looked up at me and said the words in a whisper.
“The baby is coming.” What! Now?’

Share the journey of Joy as she is drawn to be a birth worker after attending a friend’s birth. It is an event that begins the journey to the very depths of her own mysterious beginnings, to find out who she is and why she hasn’t ever seen her father. The story weaves within it the rhythms of nature as Joy gardens her allotment and appreciates the seaside landscape where she lives.

The intertwining of the personal life along with the professional life of a Doula shows the frailties and strengths of being a woman. To be a woman is something to be shared, accepted and celebrated.

Learning to understand and accept our inner landscape is a whole adventure, one that requires great strength and courage to be able to look into the less desirable shadows of ourselves and embrace it all. By doing so we can become whole beings capable of standing strong and true, able to hear the voice of our own intuition and be brave enough to listen

Since I'm a labor and delivery doula I gravitate towards books about childbirth, particularly those written by midwifes amd doulas. The author's kind and loving attitude towards supporting women in childbirth was very apparent. I like that she didn't dwell on techniques but rather on the deep connection between a woman in labor and her doula.

I loved this book! Couldn't put it down once I started and finished it in just a few hours! I loved immersing myself in Joy's doula journey - I identified with so many aspects of it and wish the book had never ended! I will keep Joy's story in my heart as I continue on my own doula journey. Thank you xo
Thank you for such a well written and lyrically illustrated story, I couldn't put it down, and especially enjoyed learning a great lot while reading it!!
Really great book. I now know that I want to get certified to be a birth doula. I Really got the feeling that birth is something that should be seen as beautiful and a miracle.
This is a great book for anyone interested in becoming a Doula. Written in a "diary" format, it is easy to read, honest in describing both the highs and lows that doulas can experience and the variety of births we witness. As a seasoned doula, I found it reaffirming and accurate both technically and emotoonally.
As an aspiring birthworking, I enjoyed reading this fictionalized account of one woman's path to becoming a doula. Overall, it was an enjoyable read, but the author's dedication to cranking in as many of the factoids related to doulaing and birthwork as possible would occasionally jar me out of the story. The knowledge presented is good, and much of the imagery is truly lovely. I ultimate came away wishing it had been a nonfiction account of the author's experience, as she clearly possesses beautiful words with which to tell the story.
